roxy
various cities, 2022–present
roxy (2022) is a collage film that traces how the actions and ideas of dada, cobra and provo shaped the conditions around club roxy in amsterdam. it connects johan huizinga’s homo ludens (1938) to postwar art, protest, and civil disobedience, using archival footage and interviews.
the film includes rare material of historic projects and events such as dylaby, new babylon and love ball, and uses early electronic dance music. roxy opened in 1987 and burned down in 1999 after the funeral of its founder, peter giele.
the film was commmissioned by the nieuwe instituut in 2021, and shown widely since.
