roxy (2022) is a collage film tracing how the actions and ideas of dada, cobra and provo shaped the conditions around club roxy in amsterdam. using archival footage and interviews, it connects johan huizinga's homo ludens (1938) to postwar art, protest and civil disobedience. the film draws on rare material from historic projects and events — dylaby, new babylon, love ball — with a soundtrack of early electronic dance music. roxy opened in 1987 and burned down in 1999, after the funeral of its founder, peter giele. it was commissioned by het nieuwe instituut in 2021 and has been shown widely since.
